World’s most interesting mathematician visits Highlands School

Maths students at Highlands were treated to a talk from the World’s most interesting mathematician on Wednesday 27th of February.

Dr Nira Chamberlain, who won the title at an international competition last year,  spoke to A level and GCSE maths students during an after school event. His inspirational talk showed students how maths is applied to the real world, and how he has applied to a range of famous projects, including helping the Ministry of Defence design and build the new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier using his “goldilocks” mathematical   model. Year 13 further maths student Charlie Palmer said: “I was amazed at how maths has been used to help military operations, and found the talk extremely inspiring. “ Further Maths teacher Ms. Shama said: “It was fantastic to have such a positive role model talk at the school and to show students the many amazing applications maths has in real life.”
