Governors' biographies

Amani Simpson

Co-opted Governor

It's an honour to be a governor at Highlands school, as this is where my younger sister, friends and cousins have attended as students.

Growing up I struggled at school, starting from Year 1 where I was bullied and struggled with my self-esteem. This affected my behaviour and caused me to explore negative pathways in search of validation which ultimately caused me to be expelled from two Enfield schools and massively underachieve at school. However, as I've matured, I've realised the value of quality education, self-discipline and nurture and have since sought to be an advocate and critical friend for young people in all areas of my life; essentially trying to be the person I needed to see and/or know about when I was younger!

Over the last few years I've been blessed to share my story of personal struggle and transformation on major platforms and also in the form of my award-winning short film 'AMANI'. This film has since been viewed on YouTube over 3.8 million times and continues to be used as a tool for empowerment and conversation across the country. I've consulted on national reports incl. The Commission On Young Lives and collaborated on impactful youth initiatives for role models and organisations incl. The Mayor Of London, Goldman Sachs, Anthony Joshua and The Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

I'm committed to serving the students and staff of Highlands with my lived experience, extensive network and unique skill set and will play my part to ensure that all of our students can be supported and empowered to thrive.
