History
Curriculum intent:
- Have an ambitious curriculum. The topics we teach are wide-ranging and challenging, which can be seen with tackling substantive concepts such as democracy with the first Year 7 unit on the Roman Republic.
- Have a sequenced curriculum. We have worked hard and with the direction and support of Christine Counsell, have a clear narrative from Year 7 - 13. Concepts are revisited and built upon - for instance democracy in Year 7, followed by the English Civil War and Revolutions in Year 8.
- Have a curriculum that participates within the community - we have ensured that our curriculum engages with questions to encourage critical thinking, such as tackling the narrative of how the First World War has been written in Year 9. We cover topics which are relevant to our democratic, such as Constantinople. We are introducing a topic on Israel and Palestine to Year 9. We have produced this over a year to ensure it isn’t ‘rushed out’ and that all teachers are confident in the resources and delivery.
- We support the school’s literacy focus by celebrating historians. For example, we include extracts from Mary Beard’s SPQR to Year 7s, which is broken down and explained. We continue this with Peter Frankopan and the Silk Roads.
- We plan collaboratively - we discussed the Curriculum Map Draft, and adapted (Romans wasn’t originally the initial focus). We give feedback to each other on resources, we have all created resources within the Key Stage 3, and ensure the topics we create link to others. We have given resources to others to review, such as the CML for Geography.
