PE
Curriculum intent:
The Physical Education curriculum aims to educate students in and through the use and knowledge of the body and its movement. Students at KS3 will experience a variety of sports and activities, which will enable them to understand the importance of sports and health related fitness in order to remain active through life.
Our curriculum consists of a broad range of competitive sports and physically demanding activities such as Netball, Badminton, Basketball and Athletics. Students begin with fundamental movement skills (FMS) in year 7 as these are an important prerequisite for learning more complex movement patterns as students move through secondary school PE.
The PE curriculum is ambitious and includes popular competitive sports that will be taught in depth alongside health related fitness and dance. It will work alongside DARE days to offer opportunities where students can experience outdoor adventurous activities and team building. Year 11 students have the autonomy of their learning to choose a PE pathway that aims to promote an active lifestyle beyond Highlands School.
The curriculum supports SEN students through adapted lessons, so they will still gain the knowledge and skills required to remain active. In classroom environments seating plans will reflect the needs of all students.
Extracurricular clubs are available to students over the course of the year. Predominantly these clubs are for traditional team and individual sports/activities. As a school we enter local, regional and national competitions and organise borough and regional events.
Core PE enables students to go on to take the subject qualifications at GCSE and A-Level, by providing them with the pre-requisite skills and knowledge required. If the examination route is not chosen, students will still positively benefit from the chance to develop a physical habit for life.
